Going up River Lambre, not far from the bridge the ruins of these ancient mills between a beautiful river landscape and grove, the natives call it of “ Misericordy”. The documents consider it as “ do Rei” and some others consider it “ from Bermudez” because the lord of Montecelo and San Pantaleón das Viñas was its owner, Mr José Maria Bermudez de Castro.
He was born in Viveiro in 1799, an was appointed as marine guard when he was eleven years old. It was after getting married that he became the owner of the country house of Mariñan. His properties were spread about between Viveiro, Pontes de Garcia Rodriguez , Pontevedra, Santiago, Cádiz and Segovia although what is is really important here is its as sets in Montecelo ( Viñas ).
Mr Jose María Bermudez de Castro was an go-ahead man which tried to improve the crops ot his area introducing new agricultural technics and innovative methods of growing.
These mills are made up of several edifications of three different ages in the XVIII century .Tradition says that in this plac the grain was milled for flours of the dockyard in Ferrol . And it should be that way because of sixteen millstones of quick productivity in this century.
The flour was brought there in a “dorna”. According to costumes of the ancient milling place, the price of the milling process was included in the transport of grain to the mill and in the placement of the flour in the costumer´s client. In the common mills, it was very common to take a small quarter of grain by “Ferrado”. This was what it was neccessary to pay for the wheat rye or mixture.
The mills were well located near the road which linked Ferrol to Betanzos by Ponte do Porco.
This group of mills was a long lined rectangle at the banks of the river, between tall trees. One of its doors, the small one has such a dilapidated inscription in the center that the name Bermudez can only be guessed.
