It is located in the parish of Villamourel, attached parish to San Juan in Paderne which includes the next places: Altamira, Batán, Calzada, Medín and Teixeiro.

It is possible that its name comes from the union of the latin word “Villa “ which was the name of a rural land or country house and “ Moure” “Mourel” o “ Mourelo” which was the name of a person.

The church can be included within the Romanesque style as amny of the ones that there are in the area of “ As Mariñas”. All of them have a nave covered with wood and a vaulted apse on the interior.

Outside, the structure is reinforced by prismatic buttress in most of the nave and the apse. The lateral doors are simple, narrow and with a plain tympanum . It is also important to point out the presence of simple windows , without being decorated, not only in the nave but also in the apse.

An interesting element is the tower that there was in that place. According to Portela Pazos, the tower was destroyed in “ La Revuelta de los Irmandiños”. In the XVII century , it was known as the Tower of Maceda which goes on record by a plane made by a Priest of Pontedeume ( Soraluce, 1984)

It is important to point out the presence of two “ antefijos” of Romanesque style. One of it is on top of a bull although it is just sculpted the head of the animal.

The sacristía , parts of the walls and the frontage are the product of a modern reform, possibly of the end of the XVIII century, or at the beginning of the XIX . The frontage is quite similar to the one of Verís with steeple and a vaulted niche over the door in which it was the image of San Juan Evangelista.

Not only the vault of the choir, but also the two supports are lancet with semi- columns under some simple capitals.
