Church of Baroque style in the XII century and of Romanesque origin, it is located in Souto, parish of Santa Maria in Souto. The church is situated in a rural area at the bottom of a hillside.

The building has a rectangular floor with just one nave and two small chapels of different proportions on each side. It was in the northern wall , to be more exact in the side which corresponds to the presbytery , that a quadrangular body which works as a presbitery was added. It has loaded walls and the roof which has two slopes is made of andn special brick. In recent times , there exists a lateral door and a small window inspired in the Romanesque. The exterior seems to be quite serious, a feature of these rural churches in which the function is more important than the just aesthetic considerations. On the other hand, simplicity and a play of symetry has the main role. It is also important to add the volumetric play which gives rise to the importance that the different parts have towards the exterior.

Its walls seem to be plastered and white washed except some borders , holes and the main frontage in which the stone can be seen: This frontage concentrates the few ornamentation of the building which is on an imaginary vertical axis which goes through the vertex of the cornice towards the rectangular and lined entry door. The belltower is an steeple made up of two bodies with three lintels . The first one giving rise to the holes in which the bells are while the second one has a small, central and circular hole and a semicircular cornies, which finishes on pinnacles.

In spite of having a romanic estructural base , Santa Maria of Souto has almost no remains of the XII century due to the complete change that it suffered in 1813. Because of that , to date the age of the building is only possible thanks to the triumphal arch with semi- columns.

Its capitals are the only elements which have a certain interest, the one of the right has leaves of rue size sculpted, while the one of the right has a bas- relieg of a wild boar.
