::Hospital in Guende.<<Back

It is located a mile away of Betanzos, according to Father Sarmiento on his journey in 1745. At this time there were just the remains because it no longer worked as a hospital and a decree was written. IN it it was stated that the functions which had been carried out until this moment by John´s heirs, owner of these properties, didn´t fulfill their obligations.

Located in Chantada, parish of Souto and founded in 1345.

Juan de Guende, who lived in this place had the custody , among other ownerships of a tin and Corporal chaliz of the Chapel , as it is stated in the book of visits at the beginnig of 1600 related to the parish of Santa Maria in Souto.

Juan de Guende had the duty to give shelter to the poors which wanted to lodge at this place, celebrate mass and take all the institutions properties under penalty of excommunication.

These costumes were so deep-rooted that once the church of Santa Maria in Souto had been built, parishoners kept on going to mass to Hospital. Because of that the religious figures were taken from hospital to the church.

In the ownership of the ancient Hospital, there exist now a group of houses in the pilgrims road to Santiago of Compostela in Chantada.
