::The pilgrim´s English route to Santiago de Compostela

This heaven between river has 5 kilometres and a half of the English route to Santiago de Compostela which begins in Ferrol and ends ,like the rest of them, in the Cathedral of Santiago.

There is historical references from the XII century which guarantee this route to Santiago´s tomb, and that with the pass of time became strengthen thanks to the hospitality that the sponsored houses offered by different religious orders, thanks to the support of some nobles and to the hospitals of the Sancti Spiritus. This is the case of the old Hospital in Guende founded around 1445 in the parish of Souto, within our town council, and that was used as a shelter and protection for all those who go by there.

The route to Paderne begins in Ponte do Porco, crossing the old local road N- 651. At the end. Of the bridge, you have to turn to the left between the houses, going up by a paved path up to arrive to the top of the tunnel of the highway. Arrived to this point the pilgrims can rest in the square of Fernando Sueiro from which you can observe beautiful sights in the estuary in O Pedrido with its two bridges. One of this, the one of the highway which was built few years ago,and the bridge in O Pedrido itself, built in 1940 and designed by Eduardo Torroja Miret. This bridge was very important in the people of this area´s life not only because it makes the communications between villages easier but also because of the thecnical advances used on its construction. By looking towards River Lambre a beautiful general view of the river can be seen.

Arriving to this place, there is a road sign which indicates the Way to St. James by a path which crosses the forest towards Lambre, quite near to the pointed bridge of the XIV century which was ordered to be built by Pérez de Andrade “ O Bo”. It is about this bridge that there is a beautiful legend( Legend of Roxin Roxal) and going up this path, at the right hand, a washing place in Lambre and next to the fountain O Pichón an stretch paved recently and which goes directly to the church of San Pantaleón das Viñas ( XII century) in front of the old country house in Montecelo.

Then there is a road sign which goes to Trasmil. The next point is to turn right and go down to the local road N- 651, going on by the verge and the old road to Chantada by the slope in Matacabalos.

In Guende, Chantada, next to the fountain , “ O Xiro”, it was the old hospital in Guende , already mentioned by Father Sarmiento on his journey in 1745 when he was going to S. Andrés de Teixeiro. It was in this year that there were only some remains because the end of the mentioned hospital took place in the first decade of 1700.

This path between the houses in Chantada joins to a road by which we must walk some metres until a deviation on the right with two deviations can be found at the same time. Then, it. Is necessary to take the path which goes up very close to the local centre in Chantada and which takes us to the high part in Souto, in Vilademeus. This is a place where you can see a wonderful general view of the estuary.

The next place to arrive is the oldest and most beautiful fountain in the Way to St. James , in Gas. This fountain dates from the XIX century . Finally, the road ends in the administrative area of Betanzos.
